exploratorium is back in action. the iconic museum reopening a few hours ago at a brand-new location moving over to embarcadero in san francisco. >> nbc bay area bob redell joining us live from the new digs with more, the man in the mirror. >> hey, marla and jon. good morning to you. remember at the old exploratorium was 44 years at the palace of fine arts in the marina district. here it is the first day open to the public, brand-new digs, embarcadero. one of the first things you catch is the view. they have tall windows. right here on the windows, back-up here, can you see we're not too far from the bay bridge. a good view of the water, the bay bridge. there's 600 exhibits in here. some you'll remember. there is a lot of oldies in here. i'm trying to remember. lets see, the toilet bowl water fountain. i think a lot of people remember that. that's always kind of hard to dripping out of. they have big parabolic dishes, the old bronze hand. again, these are things you might remember from the old location. there's also 150 exhibits that you've never seen before. over here is a video gam

[ singing ] >> reporter: that's grateful dead drummer mickey hart also a member of the exploreatorium board of directors. the surprise concert was to thank workers for the new place. it's three times as large as the old museum, as big as three football fields with 600 exhibits and a restaurant overlooking the bay. planning for the new museum began 10 years ago but fundraising efforts started in 2007. san francisco's exploratorium opened at its original location at the palace of fine arts back in 1969 as a hands-on museum where people could explore science in a different way by actually getting involved using tools and touching the exhibits. its new home will make room for thousands more visit

where the exploratorium is opening up for festivities brian? >> reporter: yes, i have two young kids as you know and you can almost bet they will be here. but this is it, the revamped brand-new exploratorium from the embarcadero and a lot of work went into moving this to this very spot to talk a little more about that process and i want to bring in kent phillips, first of all, how excited are you about this project? >> well, for the exploratorium in general, it took many years of planning and it is all coming to ahead so we are all very excited. >> it is three times as large as the old one and talk about the work that went into demolishing the old work and putting in a new one. >>> they had a lot of issues coming out with the renovation of the peers and the structural work they had. the new building is high tech and it is also a lead project so a lot of work went into the planning for net zero building. >> a lot of families are expected to be here in the coming days and what can we expect from the old building? >> just more of the same and as you know bigger and better, and it is a h

why, the grand reopening of the exploratorium. we'll tell you more about it -- coming up as "mornings on 2" continues. >>> a woman in hayward had emergency surgery after being shot while sleeping in her home. you can still see the damage hours later. ktvu's tara moriarty right outside the house and tara, you talked to one of her neighbors. >> reporter: that's right. residents at the nursing facility next door, a bit shaken. you can see the house where two bullet holes pierced the front window. that's where a woman was sleeping at 12:30 this morning when someone fired two shots inside. both of those bullets struck her in the head and neck. paramedics took her to eden hospital where she's undergoing surgery. officers cordoned off smalley street and scoured for evidence. we spoke to a nurse who works next door who said she was tending to a patient when she heard the shots. >> i just heard the pop, pop. when i went to the other room to take care of another resident, it occurred to me. i don't know what happened here. >> reporter: that nurse did not want to be identified, obvious

the spectacular free light show planned for the next two nights. >> the exploratorium is moving and for the next few weeks the facad will be transformed by a huge high-tech light show. this rendering shows one part of the wild visual adventure being created by a company called obscure digital. they also shot this video of the experiment used to build the show. they made 10 rep replicas of the facad. one so small it was on a microscope slide. and then they used all kinds of natural phenomena to create affects projected on to the explore for yum. >> we are actually taking into account the geometry of the building to wrap the light around the building. >> the new explore for yum is directly across from the embarcadero from our building. and so the master control for the light show is actually mounted on our roof. the show uses 11 super high powered projectors. they are coordinated to create a continuous image. the company says it will look woven into the skin of the building. >> how cool is that? >> fascinating. >> that's neat what they have done. the light show will go on from 8:30 to
